Chinchilla was declared a royal fur by the Incas - the coronation robe of the Inca kings consisted of chinchilla. The South American Indians knew how to spin the silky-smooth chinchilla hair into yarn and made it into expensive fabrics, blankets, and cloaks of magnificent beauty. Today chinchilla fur is used for fur jackets, stoles, capes, as well as fur blankets or cushions. Chinchilla is not a commodity fur but a luxury fur. Chinchillas are known for their high hair density. From a hair root, from which in most mammals in each case only a single hair arises, here a tuft of 30 to 60, and sometimes even more individual hairs emerge. The chinchilla hair has a fineness like no others.
