Technical terms in the furrier craftsmanship

In our fur encyclopedia, you will see a selection of special terms in the furrier craftmanship and the fur trade.

Brightener:

There are customized treatments and ways that can be used to enhance the color of the fur.

Dyeing of your fur:

Fur can be dyed in many different colors, and the color spectrum is nearly endless. If you would like to have a unique color for your new fur product, please do not hesitate to contact us. There are many vibrant colors that we can use, and we will gladly find an individual solution.

Female:

"Females" are female skins; the term is mostly used for mink skins.

Full-Skins:

The skins are processed with full fur skins. In the fur product, you can see the entire fur skins (no fur pieces).

Guard hairs:

The guard hair is long, shiny, silky and it protects the underfur.

Knitted Fur:

Knitted fur is a specific production method, where you knit fur stripes. Knitted fur is lightweight and soft. Usually, knitted fur gets produced in China, which is why we do not offer knitted fur in our product range.

Leathering:

Leathering is a specific production method where fur stripes get alternated with other materials like wool or leather. You can use it with all kind of fur skins.

Letting Out / Dropping out:

You can change the size of skin with a particular technique which is called letting out or dropping out. If you cut the fur skin in stripes and the resew the stripes together, you can make the pelt larger or smaller. You usually use that technique with mink skins, but you can also use all kind of foxes or other fur skins for this method.

Male:

"Males" are male skins; the term is mostly used for mink skins.

Mutation:

This is a permanent change of the genome. This can happen suddenly. Often, naturally occurring deviations of the normal colors can result in colors, which can then be used for further cultivation.

Plucking:

When plucking, the long hair (often unsightly and hard) is mechanically removed so that only the soft velvet underwool remains. This makes the coat very soft (velvety), and it also loses weight. This refinement is often used in minks, weasels, nutria, etc.

Print:

Printing is a finishing process where you print specific patterns or colors on the fur skins. The furs can get colored uni, partly colored or also in leoprint, etc.. There are no limits to the color of the fur.

Shearing:

Shorten the hair length of a fur to a desired length or height. You can trim the hair in different length, depending on the fur skin from some millimeter to centimeters. For this purpose, you use as a special shearing machine that shortens the hair mechanically. As in the case of plucking, a velvety effect is again created, and the fur becomes much lighter.

Tip-Dyeing / Blending.

Instead of dyeing the entire fur skin, you can only dye the tip oft he guard hairs. You see that often with lambskins

Trim:

A trimming is fur applied to existing garments. Frequently used trimmings are e.g. fur collars, jackets or coat hoods, fur collar on cuffs, or on the front of a garment. Particularly suitable for fur hats are all kinds of fox fur, sable, mink, raccoon, opossum and the like.

Underfur / Underwool:

The underfur is also called underwool which has a great isolation function. The hair is very soft, fluffy and dense. The underfur is beneath the guard hair, and it is very dense and provides warmth and isolation.
